Superior Machine Co. of S.C., Inc. (Superior) announces the completion of a turnkey project for the Gerdau Ameristeel, Charlotte, N.C. steel mill.

Superior was originally awarded this contract in December of 2007 including the design, manufacture and installation requirements to revamp the mill’s 16 ft. 6 inch EBT electric arc furnace.   

A tri-radius lower shell was engineered and provided.  Correspondingly,  a new tilt platform;  a new counterweight carriage;  new tap gates were all designed, manufactured and installed by Superior as a “turnkey” project.   In addition, Superior’s field service team reconditioned the bearing surface of the Gantry Structure and installed a new Rotek bearing in the Gantry.

Superior’s engineers designed the EAF revamp utilizing proprietary 3D modeling techniques and optimizing the design of the EAF by performing its own FEA (finite element analysis) engineering studies.
