Superior Machine Co. of S.C., Inc. (Superior) has just successfully completed the upgrade and start up of the 4 strand continuous billet caster at the CMC Steel Alabama – Birmingham facility.

Superior received a turnkey order in April 2008 for the engineering, fabrication and installation of one 4 strand continuous billet caster.

The scope of the order included complete project management and scheduling for the supplied equipment.   

And a metallurgical review prior to design was conducted.   A review of the spray water calculations and design of new 3 zone water sprays concluded.

New segment 1 & 2 were designed with water cooled back bone. The Segments were designed to simplify removal and installation, quick change pass line rolls and skid plates.

The fabrication and assembly of the upgraded caster components was made.  Lower portion of the spray chamber sheeting along with some structural replacements was included.

Superior’s field service crew managed the demolition of the existing caster segments and spray chamber. They installed the upgraded equipment, the lower portion of the spray chamber sheeting, structure and painting.    A complete alignment of segments from molds to straighteners on all 4 strands was performed by Superior’s field team.

Superior provided start-up and commissioning assistance as well.

The 4 strand billet caster resumed full operations on February 9, 2009 and immediately the operator’s comments were that they have not seen billets of this quality for a long time.
