Superior Machine Co. of S.C., Inc. (Superior) has just successfully completed the upgrade and start up of the EAF at Universal Stainless & Alloy Products (USAP) Bridgeville, Pa. facility.
Superior received a turnkey order in October 2008 for the supply and installation of one upgraded EAF. The order included a lower shell, upper shell, rockers and rocker bases.
During the preliminary site investigations it was discovered that the concrete rocker piers supporting the furnace were deteriorated and needed to be replaced. Superior was subsequently awarded the contract in December 2008 to upgrade and replace the concrete rocker piers during the scheduled March 2009 shutdown.
Superior confronted a major challenge by raising the tilt platform of the EAF (gantry still in place) to replace the associated concrete rocker piers while the tilt platform was temporarily elevated and supported. In order to accomplish this task safely, its field service team installed a temporary support structure designed by Superior to perform the required civil work.
The 50 ton EAF started up on April 6, 2009 without any issues and USAP immediately went back into full production on this date.
