Superior Machine Co. of S.C., Inc.  (Superior) has delivered a new design drop out chamber (DOC) with new respective inlets and outlets for Gerdau Ameristeel, St. Paul, Minnesota mill.

Gerdau Ameristeel contracted Superior in September 2008 to design and manufacture equipment for this project.  Gerdau recognized Superior’s ability to deliver on a fast pace to facilitate installation during their planned Christmas holiday outage.

Superior accepted the challenge to execute this project in a compressed time frame.    In addition, Superior met the challenges of having to design the downcomer section to the DOC with reduced gas flow restrictions while also having limited water supply available from Gerdau.

Superior’s years of experience in design, manufacturing and installing water cooled off gas systems provided Gerdau Ameristeel the capability they sought.  Thomas Handrich, project engineer for Gerdau, stated “we turned to Superior because of their reputation in dealing with challenging projects”.

The new DOC has improved the drop out of solids particulate from the gas stream and the new DOC roof design is more maintenance and safety friendly.
