Superior Machine Co. of S.C., Inc. (Superior) announces it has completed and shipped the major components for an upcoming revamp of North Star BlueScope Steel, LLC (NSBSS) Electric Arc Furnace (EAF).

Superior’s field service crew is in the process of reassembling the Tilt Platform,  Bottom Shell (Hearth) and Upper Shell onsite at NSSBS, Delta, Ohio that will be installed during an outage planned in the Spring of 2010.

As part of NSSBS’s efforts to both lower operating costs and reduce energy usage, NSSBS contracted Superior to design, manufacture and install new furnace components.

Superior’s mandate from NSSBS is to increase the furnace volume and simplify the design of the bottom shell.  Pre-contract studies indicated that by increasing furnace volume (both hot heel and slag volume allowance), NSBSS can lower their power consumption and decrease their tap-to-tap times.  The simplified bottom shell (hearth) design will decrease maintenance outage durations.
